October 5 – 30, 2020

Be Active Every Day is an annual public health initiative fully funded by Doctors of BC, that helps kids lead a more active lifestyle and make healthy choices. In partnership with their local elementary school, doctors across BC coordinate a month-long challenge get kids moving. Read more…

Starting the week of October 5, doctors meet with kids from their school of choice to present the Be Active Every Day challenge. With physical distancing in mind, we’re encouraging doctors to limit the size of the group they visit, and the number of visits to schools. To support a virtual campaign, we can provide doctors with a Zoom for Healthcare license to meet with kids online. At the end of the month, doctors return either in-person or via Zoom to congratulate kids on a job well done and hand out certificates for completing the challenge.

Be Active Every Day

Each year doctors and resident doctors challenge more than 5,000 students in BC schools to get active, building positive and healthy habits. Only 9% of kids meet the Canadian Guidelines of one hour of activity each day. Help BC elementary students learn the value of daily activity, by taking part in the Be Active Every Day challenge.

Be Active Every Day

How it works

Doctors visit schools in person or online to present the Be Active Every Day challenge to the kids.

The Challenge: Choose your own way to PLAY IT FORWARD get at least 60 minutes of activity every day.

Track your progress on your Challenge Chart and fill in your GOAL for the challenge

Doctors guide students through the activity challenge, and teach kids about the importance of good health, nutrition, and fitness from a medical perspective. The goal is to make a lasting impact on children and help them turn healthy choices into lifelong healthy habits.

This year’s theme is PLAY IT FORWARD – Doctors of BC and Tree Canada are planting trees to honour kids that take part in the challenge. By getting involved, kids will contribute towards planting 2500 trees – that covers the same area as 7 ice hockey fields, or 44 tennis courts. The trees planted today will be the forest of tomorrow and will help provide kids in the future with outdoor space to play in, and fresh air to breathe. These trees will reduce the effects of climate change, and aid in the restoration of ecosystems that are home to BC’s amazing wildlife, such as salmon, bears, and coastal birds.

The Challenge: Get at least 60 minutes of activity every day for the month of October.
Doctors provide kids with their very own Be Active Every Day Guide full of all the info kids will need to track their activity, read up on the challenge, and track their progress. This year kids will also get the all new Be Active Board Game to help kids build healthy habits for life through play and adventure. reinforce the Be Active Every Day messaging.

During the month, kids set activity goals and write about them in the Challenge Chart found in their all-new Be Active Every Day guide. The new guide is a pocket sized, fun, and tactile format, with all the information kids and families need to take part.

FAQ

BAED is targeted to kids aged 5-11 years old – Kindergarten to Gr 5/6.

It is not uncommon to have split classes in schools and sometimes there are children older than 11. While Be Active Every Day is targeted to kids aged 5-11, it is not exclusively for this group. Children in split classes are welcome to join in the fun!

Feel free to work with as many kids as suits your schedule and you are comfortable with. Choose a class, a grade, or the whole school – it’s up to you.

Your safety and the safety of the students and school staff is paramount. Where physical distancing is possible and depending on your comfort level, in-school visits are allowed…but not mandatory! This year Doctors of BC can arrange for a FREE Zoom for Healthcare license for all participating doctors so they can arrange a virtual challenge. Let’s show the kids that even though we are staying apart, we can still stay active!

Doctors of BC will provide participating doctors with an event package that includes a full set of speaking notes with all the messaging you need.

Go ahead! If you’ve got some info for the kids that will keep them engaged and make you feel more comfortable, have fun and be creative!

You can connect in several ways:

Doctors may already have a connection to a school (friends, family kids go there for example) and can:

  • Approach the schools themselves, or
  • Ask Doctors of BC to approach the school on their behalf.

Doctors have no school ‘attachment’ (they live near a school, but don’t know anyone there) and can:

  • Approach the schools themselves
  • Ask Doctors of BC to approach the school on their behalf.

For GPs, their Division of Family Practice can approach the school on their behalf.

Schools can also approach Doctors of BC to take part, and we work to find a doctor near them

The initial presentation at the start of the month averages between 45-60 minutes, and the follow-up at the end of the month averages between 30-45 minutes.

The challenge can be scaled up or down, depending of the number of students you meet with. Just keep in mind that larger groups will need more time during the presentations.
